PANJIM: “We will not allow Chowgule Higher Secondary to close down and government will run it if the management is not interested,” Education and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the Goa Assembly Thursday.

Parrikar was replying to Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai’s who raised the issue during Question Hour on Thursday.

Sardesai drew the attention of the education minister to alleged attempts being made by the management of the institution to create fear in the minds of students and parents of possible closure of the institution in a bid to reduce admissions.

“The student strength has reduced by 50 per cent compared to last year,” he said adding that the institution was also indulging in on-line mischief to achieve its goals of shutting down the institution.

While Parrikar told the House that the education department has not given the management permission to shut down despite a request in February this year, he said the matter is now before the High Court and the government would take a firm stand on the matter after the hearing scheduled Thursday.
