PANJIM: In a shocking incident, a young girl, who arrived with a group of students in Panjim for a Christmas party, was allegedly raped by a bus driver from Zuarinagar on Sunday night.
The incident came to light on Monday when the accused 35-year-old Chandrashekar Vasu Lamani, from Zuarinagar, Birla, Verna was arrested by the Women Police station, Panjim. The accused has been sent to four days police custody by Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC).
According to the information, a group of students hired a minibus and arrived from Vasco to Panjim for Christmas party. The vehicle was parked near a hotel in Panjim from where the students headed for a party. The victim too went along with the entire group. The group of students enjoyed drinks at the party. However, the victim started feeling uneasy after having drinks, left the party and headed to the bus to rest. This happened when all the other students were partying and she was alone in the bus.
The accused bus driver entered the bus, on noticing the victim sleeping, he sexually harassed her. The victim, who was in an intoxicated state, woke up, but couldn’t push the perpetrator away. The driver allegedly raped the girl and further warned the girl that if she revealed the incident it is she who will be shamed.
After returning from the party at 9 pm, the group of students noticed that the victim girl was in a state of shock. When one of her girlfriends enquired with her, the victim revealed the entire incident. The Women Police Station received the complaint after 11 pm. A team went out in search of the accused and arrested Chandrashekhar.
The police commenced investigation and collected some evidence for forensic investigation.
