It won’t be wrong to say that one of the most accident prone roads in the Port Town of Vasco is the Chicalim slope which leads to the city. The reason for this being the steep slope and the two blind turns that road users have to negotiate.
There have been several accidents that have been reported on this stretch of the road. Some have even ended in fatality. The large number of heavy vehicles, including heavy vehicles like over-loaded trucks, tankers, trailers, etc. which enter and leave the Port Town have to pass through this road. There have been several instances when these heavy vehicles have broken down while climbing the steep slope which has led to traffic jams. Incidentally the truck in the photo which dashed against the metal barrier was going up the slope.
It would be in the fitness of things if this particular stretch of the road was declared as “Accident-Prone Zone”. A speed-breaker or rumbler strips on the road leading to the slope would help in slowing down the vehicles which go down the slope. It is pertinent to note that a new culvert is being built along this road. This culvert will make the road even steeper and the road curve more acute. Hence it is all the more necessary to put up proper signage to warn the road users of the impending danger.
