Clear abandoned vehicles from municipal area: MMC

Team Herald

VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council Councillor Krishna (Daji) Salkar demanded the concerned authorities to clear the abandoned vehicles from the municipal area to create more space for parking vehicles.

“Traffic Police in coordination with the municipality should clear these vehicles and should either shift them at some place or auction them,” said Salkar.

Speaking to the Herald, Salkar said that there are over 300 abandoned vehicles lying at the roadsides and in public premises untouched for many years. Twice I had written a letter to the Traffic Police in this regard.

Salkar mentioned that in Panjim such issues of abandoned vehicles were solved. Similarly, to solve this issue from the Port Town, the authorities need to work in sync. I urge the Chief Officer of MMC to coordinate with the Traffic Cell and shift these abandoned vehicles to another place so that parking space for other vehicles will be available.

It may be recalled that recently Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida had told the Herald that he will be calling a joint meeting with the PWD, Municipality, Traffic Cell Vasco and other concerned authorities to implement a long pending traffic plan in Vasco town. The meeting was supposed to be held in the mid September which never happened.

The main agenda of this meeting was to put more emphasis on the implementation of the Traffic plan of Vasco town and various other issues related to traffic commotion for example parking area, dividers, zebra crossing and shifting of the abandoned vehicles from municipal area etc.

Meanwhile, sources from the Vasco Traffic Cell informed that in the month of May 2020 an application was forwarded to the Chief Officer of Mormugao Municipal Council regarding the abandoned vehicles parked in the public places. In the application, the traffic authority has also mentioned that such abandoned vehicles create problems regarding smooth flow of traffic and also cause health hazards especially during monsoon. Further, the application has also urged the concerned authority to shift such vehicles but till date nothing has been done in this direction. The application also gave the list of around 20 vehicles which includes trucks, two wheelers as well as four wheelers
