The lake is probably one of the most dangerous water-bodies around. If one makes contact with the water, the consequences could be disastrous; even fatal. The water contains numerous germs, including e-coli, which can cause diseases in humans.
The Vaddem lake has potential as a leisure and recreation spot. In the past, the Vasco Carnival Committee used to conduct fishing competitions there as part of the carnival celebrations.
Now, the marine life has been destroyed due to high pollution levels. There is a fountain in the middle of the lake that, when operated, will blow a jet of water. The fountain is currently inactive as the water that gushes out is contaminated and can turn germs airborne. During Christmas, Vaddem youth put up a huge crib or Christmas tree at the center of the lake, while during Deepawali, they set up a large akash-deep.
The lake gets a festive look during those times, and it is a pleasing sight for visitors.
The lake can be used for water sports, it can be developed into a picnic spot, and if the water is purified enough, it can be used for swimming. Summer festivals can also be held there, just like the ones held at Baina beach.
The building of St Andrews Higher Secondary School is coming up in the vicinity, which is another reason why the lake should be kept clean. In the past, it would be rented out for fishing activities, and the revenue would go to St. Andrew’s church, Vasco since the lake belongs to the Vasco church.
We know that a plan has been drawn for the beautification of the Vaddem lake. When this plan will see the light of day is anybody’s guess.
