Due to rising dengue cases, Calangute locals urge panchayat to clean drains on priority basis

The residents of Gauravaddo (east) Calangute have been pursuing since October 2021 with the Calangute Village Panchayat to clean the open rain water drains.

Gauravaddo residents have already addressed several communications to the panchayat to act urgently in order to protect the health of locals due to rising dengue cases. Recently, two deaths have been reported from the ward and many admitted to the hospital tested positive.

Last year, Health Officer Dr Roshan Nazareth controlled the spread of malaria and dengue despite the Covid-19 cases, by getting the drains cleaned of stagnated water.

Former sarpanch of Calangute by a letter Ref NO V.P/Cal/F-PWD/21-22/4199 dated January 11, 2022 to the Chief Engineer of Water Resources Department (WRD) requested to execute the delisting and cleaning of the drains of Gauravaddo (east) but the sarpanch’s efforts went in vain for the reasons best known to the WRD Chief Engineer.

Due to gravity of the situation and absence and apathy of the WRD engineers, the locals approach the Administrator of Calangute Village Panchayat to get the stagnated water in the drains cleared   by letter dated July 1, 2022.  The administrator replied stating it needs sanction from the BDO, Mapusa while the locals made to suffer and die due to dengue fever.

These stagnated drains all over Gauravaddo (east) is the main cause for the rise in dengue cases in the locality and needs immediate attention by the office of village panchayat in the interest of public health.
