We are residents of Antoneta Co-operative Housing Society, situated on a main arterial road of Borda, namely St Joaquim Chapel Road, in Margao. An impromptu garbage sorting centre has come up on a strip of vacant land right outside our doorsteps. Letters, emails and personal visits to the Margao Municipal Office has not yielded a response or even an acknowledgement.
Even the Margao Municipal Council Chairperson didn’t bother acknowledging various e-mails we have sent in the past. It is not fair to us residents that hundreds of households’ garbage is collected and dumped outside our homes – just because there is an open space available!
It is a major health hazard, especially during monsoon when the filthy leach from the garbage flows down our lane.
Also it is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Recently, there has been a drive against dengue etc, with Health Dept, personnel visiting houses to check on mosquito breeding areas. What about this filthy garbage dump-cum-sorting yard on a main road in Margao! How did they miss that?
Due to this rotting dump on our doorsteps we are forced to encounter a pack of dogs on a daily basis and they have taken over the society and are a danger to us.
We have written letters, made personal visits to the Municipal office. Even the local representative from the Council has shown her helplessness in addressing the problem. This is the state of affairs in an age of Swachh Bharat. This is absolutely unfair that our family members and children need to wade through filth.
In desperation, I have now addressed e-mails along with recent photographs to the CM Pramod Sawant, MLA Vijai Sardesai and South Goa Collector hoping for a solution.
