MARGAO: The Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) has expressed concern over garbage dumping and unhygienic conditions prevalent at the old bus stand, here and called for the intervention of the Margao Urban Health Centre.
In a letter to UHC Health Officer Dr Socorro Quadros, the GOACAN pointed out that the old bus Stand at Margao has seen dumping of garbage on a regular basis. One of the reasons for the same is that the accident related vehicles such as bikes and cars are also kept at this spot.

The letter also states that the old bus stand has fast food gaddas, including stalls that serve “wada pav” and “omelette rassa pav” besides a Goa State Horticultural Corporation Limited (GSHCL) vegetable sales outlet. The unhygienic conditions prevalent at this spot due to the abandoned vehicles and dumping of garbage pose a serious threat to public health.
The GOACAN requested the Health Officer to invoke the provisions of the Goa Public Health Act 1985 and Rules 1987 and issue the necessary letters to the Margao Municipal Council and Margao Town Police Station to take immediate action on the unhygienic conditions prevalent at the old Bus Stand.
In view of the World Food Safety Day to be observed on June 7, the GOACAN also requested the Health Officer to convene a joint meeting of the Margao Municipal Council, Margao Town Police Station, Directorate of Food and Drug Administration and GSHCL so as to work out a long term plan to adopt the required standard operating procedures for the old bus stand in terms of public health and food safety.
