Horrible plight of Residents of Feira Alta, Mapusa

The PWD, Panaji, has contracted the work of laying sewerage lines in Mapusa to Simplex Engineering, Calcutta. The work has been varied out in a very haphazard way. The excavation work being carried out causes a lot of hardships to the residents of the area. Water mains and individual connects are broken in the process causing a criminal waste of water. Many connections have not been restored yet, forcing residents to purchase water through tankers. Our Society purchases two/three tankers a day, costing us about Rs.25,000/- to 30,000/- per month. Who will reimburse us the money? The pipelines are laid underground without any base to prevent them from getting de-leveled. The chambers laid along with the pipeline are at different levels. Some are about 6” above road level and others are about 6” below road level. This is causing a lot of accidents on our roads. The excavated mud and stone is dumped in the storm water nullahs. A lot of mud and stones are still lying on the side of the roads. In this monsoon, the whole area will flood and enter the low level houses and cause a lot of accidents. The filling of the trenches has been done in a hurry with no water poured in for settling of the mud. This will cause the road to sink after a few showers. The patch up done is more neven as compared to the road before excavation. I have been constantly pulling up the contractor’s engineer for the haphazard work, but it falls on deaf ears with all false promise to rectify the same. The work is left incomplete as the contractor and his men have disappeared. Since the start of the work, we have not seen a single engineer from the PWD for supervision. Is it not the duty of the PWD to follow up with the work and the specifications in the contract?  God help the residents of Feira Alta, Altinho, Mapusa this monsoon.
