Karaswada-Cunchelim petrol pump junction area turns into a garbage hotspot

The Karaswada- Cunchelim petrol pump junction area along the Cunchelim-Siolim road has become a garbage hotspot. The waste generated from nearby kiosks, restaurants and residential areas are dumped illegally along the road violating the solid waste management norms.

As the garbage is dumped indiscriminately, it attracts cattle, dogs, scavengers and has become a health hazard in the area. Along with food waste of kiosks and restaurants, cows and buffaloes also consume trash which includes plastics, which may result in their deaths due to indigestion.

The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has turned a blind eye to the garbage menace. If the garbage is not disposed of properly and scientifically, then there is a high possibility that people in the vicinity may witness outbreak of communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, diarrhea, etc.

The MMC ought to view this seriously and clean the area, and also install CCTV cameras to maintain a vigil on the culprits who throw garbage on the roads. The council should constitute a special squad who should be entrusted with the responsibility to keep a check on such illegal activities and penalise the violators as per the existing laws.
