SANGUEM: Though Sanguem citizens had initially dreamt of a new-look sports complex after the renovation work, the situation seems to have turned worse and by the looks of it the complex may not be ready on the expected date, as the contractor has left a large section incomplete.
It is almost a year since the contractor has left the work incomplete and despite this there are no signs of the Sports Authority of Goa taking any corrective measures to initiate the completion of work at the Government Sports Complex at Sanguem.
Phone calls by this correspondent to the Sports Authority of Goa to clarify over the matter went unanswered.
A citizen from Sanguem, Jervis Fernandes termed the incomplete project work at Government Sports Complex Sanguem as highly deplorable and demanded immediate completion of the incomplete work.
He also claimed the steps at the sports complex were faulty and need reconstruction. “The first step leading to the spectators stand is literally very high and one needs support to climb the stand,” he complained.
Vinay Gaonkar, a cricket fan and a regular visitor to the Government Sports Complex, Sanguem claimed the authorities to have spoiled the ground by undertaking the renovation work.
Prior to the renovation work, the ground was widely used for conduct of football and cricket matches. However, now on account of the incomplete project work, the use of the sports complex remains at a bare minimum.
He informed that the walking track which was largely used by the morning and evening walkers has turned into a nightmare for the elderly joggers on account of its incomplete work.
The uneven condition of the walking track has made the use of the track all the more treacherous, he claimed.
The work of the reconstruction of the Government Sports Complex at Sanguem was undertaken a couple of years back and was expected to be completed last year. However, even before the work could be completed, the contractor abandoned the work midway, giving the complex a shabby look, particularly the jogging track and the spectators stand.
Locals now want the authorities to intervene and complete the remaining work of the Government Sports Complex at Sanguem.
