CANACONA: A four-lane national highway at Canacona that passes over Talpona, Galjibag and Mashem Rivers has been talk of the town due to its sub-par quality work.

The Char Rasta-Mashem bypass, which was built at the cost of crores of rupees was inaugurated by Chief minister Pramod Sawant two years ago. There were complaints about the questionable quality of material used to construct the highway and bridges, which are turning out to be true.

Most of the internal roads in the taluka are in dilapidated condition and so, the locals had an overwhelming expectation from this link road. There has been a rise in the accidents reported on this highway in the last two years, wherein many people have lost their lives.

A couple days ago, a car turned turtle on the Galjibag Highway at Kindlebag but fortunately the driver escaped without any harm. To enter Canacona Taluka from Goa, one has to cross Karmal Ghat, which is full of tricky curves. This has been cited as one of the main reasons for Goans to visit the southernmost taluka less often.

There have been demands for a four-lane road to be carved in the Ghat section. The nature lovers, however, have opposed to widen the road as that would involve felling of thousands of trees.
