After a brief encounter with “artificial eggs” made of “plastic” and adulterated milk, India is now dealing with rumours of alleged sale of “plastic rice”. Every now and then one hears of news on social media of plastic rice, plastic eggs and even plastic sugar being sold in the market in several states which has created a lot of buzz in the country.
A video clip that has gone viral on the social media even shows how “rice” is actually made from plastic sheet by feeding it into a machine. With rumours about plastic rice, plastic eggs and plastic sugar raising suspicions about the quality of food being consumed, the Karnataka government has reportedly ordered an inquiry to know the facts on the ground.
After the news of food retailers openly selling plastic rice at Uttarakhand market surfaced, now ‘artificial eggs’ made out of plastic was reportedly found in two schools in Orissa. Kolkata was reportedly hit by a mass production of artificial eggs, allegedly made of plastic, which has led to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to order an investigation into it.
The rumour mills were buzzing in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh with stories of ‘plastic rice’ being sold at grocery stores.
If there is any truth in such reports then it is a very serious matter and the authorities concerned in these states should take necessary action as it concerns the health of the citizens.
There is also every possibility of such artificial food having entered Goa, if at all it exists. Citizens in the state need to be alert and bring to the notice of the authorities if they find anything suspicious of the food items they buy in the market.
