BICHOLIM: The Sanquelim Municipality went out of the way and cleared the garbage dumped by some unknown persons on the Bicholim-Sanquelim highway.
It may be stated that Herald had earlier highlighted the issue of garbage being dumped on the highway and the entire stretch had become a dumping site. The Karapur Sarvan panchayat was unable to give any proper answer over this issue and as there was no garbage management with the panchayat they were unable to lift the same. With each passing day the garbage was growing and the panchayat was not able to even identify the perpetrators.
“It is a grave problem but we don’t know who is dumping the garbage in the panchayat area,” a local Panch, Yogesh Pednekar had said earlier. Herald had also raised the issue with the local MLA, Pravin Zantye, who had assured that he would look into the matter. “If it is along the roadside it comes under the highway authorities and they have their separate mechanism to tackle garbage dumps on the highways,” Zantye had said adding “I will ask the concerned authorities to look into the matter.
“Inspite of all the assurances nothing had happened and no one cleared the garbage. On June 15, the SMC chairman, Dharmesh Saglani, going out of the way went to the site along with the municipal workers and cleared the garbage. People from the area have expressed satisfaction over the incident.
