I t is horrible to drive on Mapusa roads. Some research must go into logically reasoning, as to why our roads last only for one year.
We need more traffic lights and traffic police to man our perilous roads. The control van should not be used only to read newspapers and endless chatter on mobile phones, but the police inside that van should be given powers to penalize all driving without licence, carrying huge loads on two-wheelers, driving on the wrong side of the road and on ‘no-entry’ zones, over-speeding and in zig-zag manner, driving vehicles without number plates etc.
Besides all vehicles that do not seem roadworthy, old and more than fifteen years old should not be allowed to ply on the roads, so that others do not suffer.
The non-Goan contractors drive two-wheelers recklessly, sometimes with three to four seating on a two-wheeler and carrying dangerous items like ladder, rods, glass, drums, ply, wood etc on their two-wheelers.
The traffic crane visits Mapusa three times a day and most of the times vehicles are parked in no parking zones.
Also, the no-parking zone around the Mapusa Court is used by unauthorised users to park their vehicles.
Unfortunately, besides the illiterates, even the educated drive in reckless manner. Sometimes even advocates in a hurry to reach the Court drive recklessly and dangerously, without a care in the world, despite knowing all the rules in the book.
Many a time, vehicles are seen parked on both sides of the road near the Court and on many instances we can see the police van parked in no-parking zone.
Sadly, the government servants too do not adhere to traffic discipline. Kadamba buses are the most dangerous buses and they always so fast and stop everywhere and anywhere and in the middle of the road, without any signal or any respect for the law or other motorists.
It’s high time the concerned authorities use the control van as a mini traffic police station and check all those who do not follow the traffic rules.
In my opinion, people disobeying traffic rules and breaking rules should be imprisoned instead of fining.
In a country of teeming millions, decency seems to have taken a backseat and on the road it the same old jungle rule of ‘might is right.’ Hope someone is listening!
