PERNEM: Locals residing near the Tuem IDC have started to dump their garbage in the area. Left with no proper garbage dumping facility, the residents have now started throwing waste out into the open.
To make matters worse, the area has started attracting stray cattle and dogs who feast on the leftover waste dumped in the open.
Sources informed that this dumped garbage remains for weeks till the local panchayat clears it. Along with locals, the migrants residing in this area too have started dumping their garbage here causing the area to stink which has turned out to be a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
The panchayat only collects dry plastic waste once a week, which is further disposed at the treatment plant.
On the other hand, locals claim that the migrants are to be blamed for dumping their garbage in the industrial area as they lack a proper garbage dumping facility.
A resident Kirti Kanolkar said, “Landlords have rented out their premises to outsiders but have failed to provide them with a garbage dumping facility. The vehicles come to collect the garbage but these migrants refrain from handing over the waste to the workers engaged by the panchayat for collecting garbage. It is due to such people the whole area is stinking”.
