PANJIM: The elections to the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Corporation of the City of
The issue of postponement of elections just minutes before the scheduled meeting of the CCP which had been called to conduct the elections, on directive from the Directorate of Municipal Administration led to a major face-off between the BJP backed ruling corporators and the Opposition group backed by Sta Cruz MLA Atanasio Monserrate.
Sixteen Opposition corporators subsequently rushed to call on the Governor at Raj Bhavan and subsequently filed a writ petition before the High Court of Bombay at Goa which turned down the ad-interim relief plea seeking to restrain the powers of the sitting CCP Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
Incidentally, when the matter was being heard in the High Court, the government announced in the House that CCP elections for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor would be held on April 4.
