PORVORIM: Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to construct multi-storey commercial complexes in the town and embark on pay-parking areas in a bid to generate more revenue for the Council.
Speaking to Herald, MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari stated that MMC has decided to construct a commercial complex in the open space behind old St Mary School building. “About 1,700 sq mtrs built-up area is available for the complex. The basement will be reserved for pay car parking, while the floors will be given on rental/auction basis,” informed Falari.
“MMC propose to demolish municipal garage which comes under commercial zone and construct second commercial project in which basement will be reserved for parking of vehicles,” he added.
“The flower market located in the municipal market is in pathetic condition and it will be demolished and a new commercial complex will be built. The existing flower vendors will be accommodated in the new complex and the remaining area will be auctioned,” he said.
Falari said MMC has also decided to reconstruct vegetable market through Goa State Urban Development Agency and shift the vegetable vendors, numbering 230, in it.
Falari said most of the office-goers park their vehicles near market area and proceed to their offices by buses. “The space gets occupied from morning till evening and the people visiting Mapusa for shopping do not get room to park their vehicles. Hence, MMC propose to convert the open area opposite the grams vendors in the market and open space near inter-state bus stand into pay-parking areas on trial basis,” he said.
