PANJIM: In
view of rising accidents and rampant traffic violations, Chief Minister
Laxmikant Parsekar has called for people’s education on following traffic norms.
Speaking
at the inauguration of the road safety awareness lectures to be conducted in
Panjim and Margao every Saturday, the CM raised concern over the high rate of
road fatalities.
“Traffic
safety awareness is the need of the hour. All
possible measures should be adopted to educate the masses on traffic safety
awareness. Many precious lives, especially that of the youth, who are assets of
the State, have been lost in road accidents,” he told a gathering on Saturday.
Considering
that motor vehicle collisions per lakh population in the State is four times
more than the national average, Director General of Police Muktesh Chander had
proposed conducting free training sessions on road and traffic safety for people
and students. In an interview with Herald in May, he had suggested a three-hour
session at the Porvorim and Margao district headquarters insisting on self
discipline on roads.
Meanwhile,
Parsekar stated that students play a vital role while advising the police not
to limit the awareness drive to the two places but to take it in the remote
places for wider awareness.
