Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Thursday assured the House to examine pending payment of compensation to farmers who lost their crops due to unseasonal rain last monsoon as Opposition corned the government over the issue.
Mandrem MLA Laxmikant Parsekar raised the issue of non payment of financial assistance to farmers during Question Hour. He said, government has failed to pay compensation assurance for which assurance was given on the floor of the House, last year.
As per estimates of Agriculture Department, total 7580 farmers were affected by unseasonal rains with crop loss amounting Rs 9.18 crore.
Parsekar demanded to know time frame by which the assistance would be provided to farmers.
Responding to the question tabled Agriculture Minister Vishwajeet Rane said, they could not compensate farmers as there was no budgetary provision to offer such financial assistance. The proposal was sent to Revenue department, however, he promised, to take up the issue with chief minister.
However, Parsekar supported by Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar demanded that chief minister himself should make a statement in this regard.
Kamat who appeared reluctant to make a statement, gave in, eventually as persisted with their demand.
