CANACONA: After being severely criticized following the Ruby Residency building collapse, the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) acted tough and demolished furniture stalls still operating from the feast fair at Chaudi town.
On Monday, CMC workers led by Municipal Inspector Yesso Dessai were seen carrying demolitions of furniture stalls which had been set up for the January 13 feast of St Thereza of Jesus Church, Chaudi. These stalls were found prominently displaying furniture and related items, and were reportedly carrying on business without any licenses from authorities.
“A total of nine furniture stalls were razed on Monday, after CMC chief officer Ajit Panchwadkar issued an order to initiate action to demolish feast fair stalls operating beyond the permitted period,” informed CMC Municipal Inspector Yesso Dessai.
According to sources, all the fair stalls including the furniture joints were permitted for period of 10 days, but many continued beyond that period with some winding up their businesses as late as last Saturday, leaving a trail of plastic and paper waste, which was later cleared by CMC workers.
The furniture stalls continued their trade ignoring the validity of their operations.
CMC workers removed the wooden poles and pulled down the plastic covers of various stalls, as worried salesmen engaged by these stalls were seen frantically shifting some furniture to safety.
