MARGAO: Colva has been craving for adequate toilet and waste disposal facilities given that hordes of tourists visit the famous beach.
While the expert committee has confirmed the contamination of the Colva creek, experts have called for putting a mechanism in place for sanitation and waste disposal facilities given Colva’s status as a tourist destination.
The committee has recommended adoption of a multi-bin system to enable segregation of waste at source of biodegradable and non-biodegradable solid waste. This waste is to be further segregated for specific materials such as plastics, paper, glass etc. The expert committee has suggested to the authorities to devise a suitable plan for safe disposal of solid wastes. “Since the Colva beach is visited by tourists and local visitors, clusters of such multiple bins may be provided at convenient points in the area. This shall substantially reduce any material which randomly finds its way to the drains leading to clogged drains,” the committee observed.
On the sanitation front, the committee felt that the existing services of toilets may be insufficient, while recommending construction and maintenance at suitable locations for public convenience. “The Colva beach area is a destination for large number of foreign and domestic tourists. Besides, there’s a presence of workers working in the unorganised sector. Additional sanitation facilities at suitable locations for public convenience are a must,” the Committee pointed out.
Local NGOs, including the Colva Civic and Consumer Forum had been crying foul over inadequate public toilet facilities near the beach, forcing the visitors to answer natures call in the open area. The public toilet manned by Sulabh International is located near the entrance to the Colva square.
