MARGAO: The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority issued a demolition notice to a hotel in Colva for allegedly having structures in the property bearing Survey Numbers 24/2, 24/3, 24/11 and 24/12 in violation of the CRZ notification.
According to the GCZMA, all said structures were constructed after 1991 and are therefore illegal.
Further, the GCZMA also issued demolition order against a famous bar and restaurant for allegedly having another two-floor structure in a property bearing Survey Number 39/1, and a guesthouse in Survey Number 53/2 owned by one Ashok Kumar Vaid.
The demolition notices were issued on December 5, based on complaints filed by the Colva Civic and Consumer Forum. The owners have also been asked to restore the land to its original condition within 30 days. Judith Almeida, a representative of CCCF, thanked the GCZMA for its action towards protecting the beach.
“The owners will surely appeal against the order but I hope this sends a message to other potential violators that such illegal construction and destruction of sand dunes will not go unchecked and unpunished. These people want to make quick money by doing all such illegal constructions. The sea level rise has already damaged the vegetation and dunes. We have to protect out CRZ areas,” she said.
