MARGAO: The presence of a black substance that is part of the mud that has been filled in a pond located on the side of the Mungul- Colva road has raised concerns amongst local residents.
The mud is part of the landfilling that has been done for the construction of the western bypass.
While locals of Seraulim village have questioned why the pond could not have been saved given that it’s a water body.
Moreover, with the monsoons approaching, the black substance has already started seeping into the pond and the surface of this water body now is partially covered with this black liquid floating over it. Locals from Colva have also called for an investigation into what the material is.
Intrigued by the black substance along with the mud that has been used to fill the pond and it doesn’t look good to me at all,” said Joed Almeida, Colva resident.
“I find it funny that when our Minister for Forests takes strict action against the hill cutting and illegal work in Calangute recently, this unplanned work done by the government seems to evade his attention. The way Goa has seen unplanned development and destruction of the environment, I won’t be surprised if this monsoon brings more devastation to Goa, unfortunately, it’s always the common man who has to deal with this while the rich and mighty don’t,” he added.
Concerned locals have also raised concerns about possible flooding in this area due to the filling up of the catchment area.
