Colva panch granted bail

PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa granted bail to Colva panch member, Calvert Gonsalves, but restricted him from visiting Colva. He was released from judicial custody on Tuesday after furnishing a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh.

Gonsalves, however, will be allowed to attend the panchayat meeting after giving a 24-hour notice to the investigating officer once the investigation was completed.
The court also directed him to inform the investigating officer about his new residence out of Colva, and to surrender his passport at the police station to restrict him from travelling abroad while the investigation was in process. He was also directed to co-operate with the investigating agency and refrain from tampering with evidence.
In November 2014, the Anti-Corruption Bureau registered an FIR against Gonsalves under the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly having disproportionate assets. He was arrested on April 7, 2015 after his anticipatory bail petition was rejected by the Special Court, North Goa. He remained in police custody until April 15, and thereafter in judicial custody.
Arun De Sa, who appeared in court on behalf of Calvert, said the case would not stand the scrutiny of a proper probe.
