MARGAO: South Goa Principal District and Sessions Judge
Nutan Sardessai on Monday dismissed as withdrawn the anticipatory bail
application filed by Colva panch Calvert Gonsalves. The order on his
application was scheduled to be pronounced the same day, but Gonsalves sought
to withdraw his application, clearing the decks for police to now arrest him.
It may be recalled that fellow Colva panch Francisco Cardozo
filed a complaint at the Colva police station alleging that Gonsalves, at a
panchayat meeting on August 29, made repeated filthy derogatory and casteist
remarks and threatened him. Accordingly, an offence was registered against
Gonsalves under Section 3 (X) of SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act 1989 and
Section 504 of IPC. In terms of the provisions of the SC/ST Act, the
investigation was later transferred to Margao Sub-Divisional Police Officer
Dinraj Govekar.
Fearing arrest, Gonsalves, represented by Adv Rajeev Gomes,
had filed for anticipatory bail and the arguments were heard last week.
