MARGAO: The Colva Panchayat vehemently opposed motor paragliding activities on the bustling beach, citing safety concerns and limited space.

Sarpanch Suzie Fernandes highlighted the risks posed by the sport and stated that it was just not feasible to hold such activities here considering the crowds that gather at the beach.
Following the site inspection conducted by the panchayat, Fernandes referred to a past incident in which a tourist couple sustained permanent disabilities due to a motor paragliding accident. “The beach is already congested with visitors and shacks, leaving little room for such activities,” she noted, while speaking to the media, further adding that safety must take precedence over tourism ventures.
The findings from the inspection are set to be reviewed at the upcoming panchayat body meeting before any final decision is made. The Sarpanch acknowledged the panchayat’s commitment to fostering tourism but stressed, “Tourism cannot come at the cost of human life.”
Simon Rodrigues, a Colva resident and vocal critic of motor paragliding at the beach, was also present during the inspection. Rodrigues, while speaking to the media, reiterated his concerns about the risks associated with the sport, recalling the tragic accident involving a German couple, in which one victim’s fingers were severed. “Colva is an iconic beach, not a venue for motor paragliding,” he asserted, proposing that a dedicated location for the activity be identified elsewhere.
Rodrigues also urged Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte to ensure that tourists visiting Goa leave with happy experiences rather than suffering injuries during their stay. “We must ensure that such incidents do not tarnish Goa’s reputation as a tourist-friendly destination,” he added.
The issue had earlier been raised at the Colva gram sabha, where residents voiced concerns about the safety implications of introducing motor paragliding in such a densely populated area. The Sarpanch reaffirmed that the panchayat’s stance would prioritise both visitor safety and the sustainable promotion of tourism activities.
