Colva sarpanch’s election postponed

COLVA: The election to the post of Colva sarpanch scheduled on June 4, has been postponed. Director of Panchayats Siddhi T Halarnkar issued an order on the eve of the election (June 3) evening which stated 

“The election of sarpanch which was scheduled on June 4, 2021 of the Colva Village Panchayat of Salcete Taluka stands postponed until further orders since a representation dated June 2, 2021 is received from four panchayat members stating that relatives of some panchayat members have tested COVID positive and one of the relatives of panchayat member has expired due to COVID and it is not advisable to hold meetings in view of the ongoing COVID pandemic.”

The Colva sarpanch post has been vacant since the then incumbent and panch Anthony ‘Mam’ Fernandes tendered his resignation on March 8, to the Salcete Block Development Officer (BDO) citing ‘personal reasons’. However, reliable sources informed that this move was part of the informally agreed upon seat-sharing pact amongst the five ruling panchas of the nine-member panchayat.
