PANJIM: After gangster fights and killings inside judicial lockups, the jail authorities have been further embarrassed by fights among the staff at the Central Jail at Colvale.
A jail guard, Krishna Mandrekar, suspected to be under the influence of liquor, created a ruckus at the main entry point of the jail last week, and got into an alleged fight with the IRB personnel on duty at the main gate. Jail authorities have suspended him for misconduct at odd hours.
All the jail entry and exit points are manned by IRB of Goa Police. The entire security of the jail is in their hands and jail authorities have made it compulsory that the main gate be closed at 10pm for security purposes and opened only at 6.30am.
However, Mandrekar, who was on duty on that particular day arrived at the gate at around 11.45pm and created a ruckus after the security officer, following orders, didn’t allow him to enter the jail.
It is learnt that the jail guard used abusive and filthy language against jail staff on duty and banged the main gate of the jail. It is further learnt that the jail guard even tried to assault security personnel.
Jail Superintendent Shyamsundar Parab said that following the police report the jail guard has been placed under suspension. He said that Mandrekar was not allowed inside the jail till 6.30am and since then has not reported for duty.
Sources said that Mandrekar was recently transferred from Sada Sub jail and had been given an oral warning by the Superintendent on two occasions.
