PANJIM: An Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) commando sustained serious injuries after a dummy grenade exploded near his foot during a mock counter terror exercise (Gandiv-2) in the new super specialty block of Goa Medical College (GMC) on Tuesday.
Jaydev Sawant was immediately given first aid and rushed to GMC where he underwent an emergency surgery for leg fracture. A senior officer said the ‘brave commando’ is recovering while ruling out lack of preparedness.

“The teams have worked very hard. Such incidents can happen anytime. It is a professional hazard. They take it in their stride. The mock drill is a multi-agency exercise in which the capabilities are challenged to the extreme. It is basically a high level exercise testing of the capabilities of all the government departments,” the officer said, speaking about the incident that occurred in the presence of Director General NSG, Director General of Goa Police Mukesh Kumar Meena and other senior officers. The officers thereafter visited the commando inquiring about his well being.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant also later attended the mock counter terror exercise that ends on Wednesday. “Attended the mock counter terror exercise #Gandiv-2 demonstration conducted jointly by multiple agencies – NSG, Goa ATS, Navy, Coast Guard and Goa Administration,” Sawant tweeted.
The joint exercise comprises around 500 NSG commandos and 1000-odd personnel from Goa Police including the ATS.
