PANJIM: Percept’s Sunburn electronic dance music (EDM) festival and Goa government may be held for contempt of the National Green Tribunal Court order passed recently to monitor the sound decibels at the festivals.
Two complaints were filed at Anjuna Police Station on December 27 and 28 against Sunburn alleging that the sound levels recorded by complainant Jaiprakash Sirsaikar exceeded 90 db. Sirsikar told Herald that the decibel level permitted as per the HC order is 55 db. “The decibel level we recorded is more than the limit set by the court,” Sirsaikar said.
National Green Tribunal (NGT) in its order last week directed Goa Police to confiscate the sound system/ amplifier if the organizers do not obey the HC order to control the sound pollution.
Michael D’Souza, Chairman of Anjuna Caisua Biodiversity Management Committee, which is affiliated to the Goa State Biodiversity Board, filed a separate complaint at Anjuna Police Station to stop the Sunburn festival as the police have not received the permissions from neither the government nor the organizers.
“I in capacity of chairman of the Biodiversity Management Committee had gone to check at the Police Station to find out about the permissions but to my knowledge the permissions were not there with the Police and hence police have advised me to file the complaint, which I have given to them,” D’Souza said.
He said that besides the permission issue the decibel level recorded by them as a team exceeds the limit set by the authorities and alleged that GSPCB is not monitoring it constantly.
