Cong demands inquiry into suicide of patient at GMC

Health minister rules out any inquiry into the incident

PANJIM: Congress party on Sunday demanded thorough inquiry into the death of a senior citizen, who jumped from the third floor of Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), where he was admitted.
A 68-year old Ravindra Chandru Naik committed suicide on Saturday early morning.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has said that he would call for a meeting of Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) for undertaking necessary structural changes at the hospital to avoid such incidents in future.
Addressing media persons, Congress spokesperson Urfan Mulla said that government needs to conduct an inquiry into what led to the suicide of the patient. “It is very important to know whether it was really a suicide or someone provoked him to do so,” he said.
Mulla also said that government needs to put in place all the measures to ensure safety of patients and visitors.
Earlier in the day, Rane said that he would issue directions to GSIDC for putting in place safety measures. He even said that death of Naik was unfortunate and that there is no question of any inquiry.
“Naik was not alone in his ward. His wife was along with him. He had multiple medical issues. What has happened is shocking and unfortunate,” he commented.
