PANJIM: The Congress on Wednesday demanded a Crime Branch inquiry into the Goa Medical College (GMC)-Goa University result bribery allegations levied by a female MD student, whose result was kept on hold.
Addressing media persons on Wednesday, Congress General Secretary Trajano D’Mello said, “We don’t believe that the internal inquiry by University or government inquiry will give justice to the victim. We demand that the government without wasting time hand over the investigation to Crime Branch,” he said.
D’Mello said the complaint is of a serious nature not just because of the quantum of bribe demanded but because doctors who are part of a noble profession are supposed to set an example. “The student is pregnant. There are complaints that she was made to do various duties which could have affected her pregnancy,” he said.
“The nexus between the GMC faculty and Goa University officials has to be exposed,” he said. D’Mello also slammed the State Women’s Commission for its failure to act in the case.
Herald had exposed how a pregnant student was denied her result for over a month while the results of other students of the same department were declared. According to students, a senior doctor in the Skin Department was demanding a bribe of Rs one lakh to declare the results, however, the HoD had refuted the allegations.
Following the Herald expose, the Government had ordered an inquiry but the victim was not questioned.
