Cong slams govt for slow pace of work at Bastora junction

Says motorists facing severe inconvenience due to potholed service road

MAPUSA: The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) has criticised the government for failing to provide the people of Goa good roads.
Addressing the media at the Mapusa party office on Tuesday, spokesman Amarnath Panjikar said that the service road at the Bastora junction is in a bad condition due to which commuters using the road are facing severe hardship.
“This service road is full of potholes; as such, commuting through this road is a nightmare. Besides, this road is witnessing traffic jams during peak hours,” he said.
Stating that the slow pace of road underpass at Bastora junction is causing severe inconvenience to the people, he condemned the government for the same.
“The work of the flyover began in January 2016 and was supposed to be completed by June 2017. The department sought an extension of six months but failed to meet the deadline. Again, the locals were assured two more dates of March and May by which time the flyover would be ready. But it is nearly end of July and this flyover has not seen the light of the day,” he said.
He said that barely six months ago, the service road was hot-mixed but since the work was of substandard, the same was washed away in heavy rains.
“Every planned works carried out has a warranty of three years and unplanned works has the warranty of two years. Within six months of hot-mixing this service road, the tar has got washed away which indicates that poor quality of material was used. This is a total waste of tax payers’ money. To make matters worse on this ruined road on July 9 pavers have been placed due to the intervention of Aldona MLA Glenn Ticlo,” he added.
Therefore, Panjikar has urged the Highway Authorities to speed up the work on this on-going project.
