Cong to speak in different ‘voices’

Luizinho appoints Deshprabhu, Kawthankar as new spokespersons, Says not in favour of reversing decisions taken by John

PANJIM: Amidst speculations over the re-entry of party dissidents, against whom action was initiated by the former Congress president John Fernandes, the newly inducted Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) chief Luizinho Faleiro said that he is not in favour of reversing the decisions taken by his predecessor.
Luizinho on Monday, however, appointed a new panel of party spokespersons by dissolving the earlier panel. Jitendra Deshprabhu and Sunil Kawthankar were appointed as new spokesperson by dropping Fernandes loyalists — Durgadas Kamat, Pratima Coutinho and Urfan Mulla.
Speaking to media, Luizinho said he has received a letter from All India Congress Committee’s general secretary and Goa desk in-charge Digvijaya Singh asking him to revamp the GPCC. “But I am not going to change anything right now,” he said.
“I am not here to undo what my predecessor has done. But I am yet to see the file of the disciplinary committee which had taken action against the leaders,” he said.
Post Lok Sabha elections, Fernandes-headed disciplinary committee had initiated action against former power minister Aleixo Sequeira, suspended Goa Pradesh Youth Congress Committee President Valanka Alemao, defeated Lok Sabha candidate Ravi Naik and former member of Parliament Francisco Sardinha and former minister Joaquim Alemao for anti-party activities during and after parliamentary elections.
Luizinho said that he has inquired with the disciplinary committee members about the file and they claimed that it is with Fernandes.
“I don’t know whether the file is submitted to the high command or still with him,” Luizinho disclosed, adding that any decision to take action against the leaders or induct new faces is always the prerogative of the Congress President. Most of the party dissidents had shared the dais with Luizinho at his induction function in the city on October 14. Responding to queries the former president had said that the decision to allow party dissidents could create a backlash against the party.
