Cong urges Agri Market Yard chief to step down

CURCHOREM: Goa Congress Pradesh Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar has urged Prakash Velip to step down as chairman of Agricultural Produce Market Yard for the love of farmers as the BJP government is working against the interest of poor farmers and pleasing the crony capitalists.

He was speaking at “Kisan Melava” organised by Goa Pradesh Kisan Congress in the community hall, Rivona in the presence of Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat, South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha, Rivona Block President Josephina Rodrigues and Congress Kisan Cell Convenor Abhijit Dessai.

Congratulating Velip for his statement that the government will lose Rs 9 crore besides loss for farmers after implementing the farmers’ law, Chodankar said for the last seven years BJP is again shouting that this is poor people’s government but in reality this government is of industrialists, corporate houses and of the rich.

“Around 75 crore farmers along with more than 250 associations are protesting these anti-farmer bills as they know that the government is trying to sell them to corporates,” alleged Chodankar and added that the Congress will continue to support the farmers’ agitation till they get justice.

Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat said, “India is an agricultural country and that each poor farmer is working hard to give us food and instead of helping them, the government is doing injustice to them.”

“As a chairman for 12 years, I have started many market yards in the State so that farmers could come and sell their produce with proper rates but this government wants to finish this system where corporates will come and exploit the farmers,” said Kamat.
