PANJIM: The Congress in Goa has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding that State Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar be sacked over his insensitive remarks on the recent gang rape of two Delhi-based women.
The party has also appealed to Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar to sack the minister alleging that his comment that gang rape was a ‘minor incident’ gave a clean chit to those involved in the crime.
“We condemn the recent extremely insensitive statements made by Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar with respect to the gang rape in Goa. His statement that ‘Such stray incidents are bound to take place in a busy tourist destination like Goa,’ only goes on to show that even the Tourism Minister does not have confidence in the home minister and his administration” says the letter signed by Congress secretary Durgadas Kamat.
Kamat also said that the outrageous statement that, “The boys are ‘nadaan’ (naive) and they have small crimes registered against them…this will not happen in future,” only goes on to show that the minister considers crime on women as petty crimes.
Kamat said, “His statement only goes to show that the minister is not concerned about the safety and security of our tourists, which will drive tourists away and hamper the tourism industry,” the Congress leader said.
