PANJIM: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) has welcomed the statement of MGP president Pandurang Dhavalikar that defected MLAs should be banned for six years from contesting elections.
“Goa Congress welcomes the statement of MGP President Dhavilikar who called for a ban of six years on elected MLAs for changing their party for no proper or adequate reason,” GPCC member Subhash Phaldesai said on Thursday.
He said that all the expenses of the elections should be recovered from the people who changed their party and they must be asked to bear all the costs of the by-election process. “This will serve as deterrence to party hoppers like Dayanand Sopte and Subhash Shirodkar who changed parties solely for their own personal monetary benefit or reasons,” the Congress leader said.
Phaldesai also welcomed the suggestion to approach the court for a ban on such defectors. “MGP being the alliance partner of the government should do a positive thing and ensure that such changes are brought about in the system,” he said.
Expressing his anguish against the sudden resignation of Shirodkar and Sopte, Dhavalikar had said that MLAs defecting from the party should be held accountable and banned from contesting elections for at least six years. He had said the party is considering approaching the court for necessary directions.
Meanwhile, Congress has urged the FDA to check the vegetables that are supplied by the Horticulture Corporation at its outlets to ensure that they are not laced with pesticides.
