Panjim: A day after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled the banking licence of the State’s oldest cooperative bank-Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank (MUCB), Congress has sought Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s intervention to protect the depositors as well as the employees.
MUCB has 24 branches in the State and 193 staff members in all. Besides, the bank has 1.19 lakh shareholders and 2.48 lakh depositors.

Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat in a tweet, has said that the timing to withdraw banking licence of MUCB is not appropriate.
He has demanded that the CM should work out an action plan, to bail out the depositors, whose hard earned money is been now stuck in the bank saving.
“I demand that the CM must immediately consult the financial experts to work out a plan to protect each and every depositor and employees of the bank. Hard earned money of each person needs to be protected,” the former CM added.
MUCB had made repeated pleas to the BJP-led State government for share capital, but the government had refused to bail out the cooperative bank.
Meanwhile, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar accused the CM of “revengeful politics”.
“Revengeful politics of CM is murdering 33 year old Mapusa Urban. Why same yardsticks not applied to Goa State Co-operative bank ltd? The CM must take steps to save account holders,” he tweeted.
