Congress seeks extended sitting of Assembly session

The Congress Legislative Party (CLP) on Monday petitioned Speaker Dr Pramod Sawant demanding that the duration of upcoming monsoon session of the Assembly be increased from 12 days to 18. The session is scheduled from July 19 to August 3.
CLP, under leadership of Chandrakant Kavalekar met Monday morning to chalk out strategy and floor management for the upcoming session. Issues like Regional Plan 2021, Planning and Development Areas (PDAs), draft Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) notification of the Union Ministry, Mopa airport, drug menace, etc, are some issues the opposition will take up to corner the government.
Addressing media persons, Kavalekar said, “We have petitioned the Speaker to increase the number of sittings from 12 days to minimum 18 days, which is as per rule,” he said.
“As per the scheduled announced, the session has been curtailed to 12 days, of which general discussion is for two days and demands are for ten days. This session will also see passing of the State Budget. Also, MLAs have their constituency issues apart from general issues to be raised,” Leader of Opposition pointed out.
Kavalekar said that the budget session of the Assembly had to be curtailed from 22 days to four days on the account of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s sudden illness.
“We need time to present the burning issues and expose the government. The session has to be held for 18 days,” he said, adding that he will raise the issue during the BAC meeting.
When contacted, Sawant confirmed receiving the representation from Congress. “I will be putting it for discussion in the business advisory committee meeting proposed to be held on July 5,” he stated.
