Congress to protest new CRZ notification

State-wide protests to start from January 24

MARGAO: Congress will be holding protests across the State, beginning from Thursday, January 24 at Miramar beach against the recent Coastal Regulatory Zone Notification 2018.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) spokesperson Tulio D’Souza, said that after the draft notification was published in 2018, Congress along with many NGOs and traditional fishing communities had lodged protests across the state.
“We had protested against lowering the High Tide Line (HTL) from 200m to 50m. Even though more than 1 lakh people objected to the notification, the Government did not consult any of the stakeholders and went ahead with notifying the draft notification”, he said.
Tulio reiterated that many environmental activists and scientists have been claiming that this notification is going to lead to widespread damage to the Goan coastline and particularly the fishing community as the change in HTL will lead to the destruction of mangroves and vegetation that comes within the area.
“In the wake of global warming and rising sea levels, the threat of flooding is a real possibility and Kerala has been an example in the recent past”, he said.
