Finally, much to the relief of the residents of Mandrem, construction commenced on Monday for the 30 MLD water treatment plant at Tuem in the Mandrem Constituency of Perem Taluka. The comprehensive project, which includes a 5-year operation and maintenance period, is valued at Seventy-One Crore, Seven Lakhs, Seventy-Four Thousand One Hundred and Sixty-Three Rupees with taxes factored in.
This initiative, arising from the pressing water scarcity in Mandrem and nearby regions, is aimed at improving the persistent water shortage concerns.
“Mandrem, Tuem and parts of Pernem were reeling under water scarcity for a long time, this water treatment plant will resolve the issues of water scarcity, we only request the people to cooperate with us,” said the Sarpanch of Tuem.
Life has turned into a nightmare for people in the Mandrem constituency as people are struggling with acute water shortages. Villages from Tuem to Keri, Agarwada Chopdem, Morjim, Mandrem, Arambol, and Paliem have turned parched. “We struggled a lot for water and have constantly brought up the issues before the authorities. Now the works have finally begun and hopefully, we won’t face water woes,” said a local.
The Chandel water treatment plant which caters to the whole of Pernem taluka is unable to cater to the increasing demand for the water as it is overloaded. The population of Pernem is almost 90,500 and the taluka as a whole receives only 15 MLD of water when the actual demand is more than 30 MLD.
