MARGAO: With the entire city wearing a festive look, several roadsides of Margao and Fatorda are sadly defaced with debris and building construction material. With the landfill site at Sonsodo failed to pick up the debris since months and the bioremediation project coming to a grinding halt, the possibility of a solution to the problem of illegal dumping of inert waste is not going to come any soon.
The bypass road from Nuvem junction to Arlem junction which has greenery on either side and is a pleasure to travel on, has now become a site for dumping debris. Similarly, the lane off the Ravanfond function has been a favourite dumping spot for decades.
Several dumps of construction waste and inert garbage on the highways in Margao and Fatorda have been detected in the last few days. The quantity of this debris and the frequency of dumping has increased recently to such an extent that the waste is now reaching on the road surface. This has created a dangerous situation for two-wheeler traffic and a constant fear of accidents now lurks on these highways. Sadly, there has been no effort made by the local councillors, administration or MMC to curb the menace. The MMC has been helplessly clearing the dumped waste at Ravanfond circle only to see it back after some days.
Margao town has seen a constant surge in construction activity recently. The town has begun expanding horizontally as well as vertically. However, this has brought in a disadvantage to the ever worsening garbage problem of the town. The dumping of construction waste on road sides has made Arlem bypass and the Ravanfond junction one big garbage bin. These are areas where the entire town dumps its construction waste after cleaning its own compound.
The farmers on the Arlem-Nuvem bypass are the biggest losers to the growth of the city. The entire dumped waste in getting flown into the fields.
