MARGAO: The consumers visiting the wholesale fish market at Madel, Margao have expressed anger over the prevailing unhygienic conditions, and have urged the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA), besides the other concerned authorities to work out plans to maintain the cleanliness.
The consumers and fish vendors have complained of the pathetic conditions, mainly with regards to cleanliness. Fish water flows in the market with no proper drainage system which has caused the market to stink.
It is pertinent to note that the issue regarding the unhygienic conditions at the wholesale fish market has been discussed for the past several years and there is no proper mechanism in place. The SGPDA has failed in its efforts to resolve the issue permanently.
Taumaturgo Rodrigues alleged that the fish vendors are creating mess by releasing the fish water in the market.
“With no proper system in place, the water gets stagnated resulting in unbearable stink. The prevailing unhygienic situation may lead to a health hazard”, he said.
Most fish vendors rush to the wholesale fish market on a regular basis. People alleged that the wholesalers release the stored waste fish water from their vehicles’ water tanks in the market.
