PANJIM: Among the various departments gearing up to go cashless in a bid to curb corruption and promote carrying out hassle-free business, cooperative societies are set to implement the concept from January 1, 2017.
“We are ready to be a part of and contribute to a cashless economy. We will introduce card swipe or point-of-sales (PoS) machines across societies in the first phase while the second phase will cover the horticulture corporation,” Cooperation Minister Mahadev Naik told media persons on Monday.
To ease carrying out operations in accordance with the latest development, the minister added that 300-odd cooperative societies will be interconnected. “Moreover, around five lakh account holders will be given a chip that will cost Rs 275 to enable mobile banking. One can then pay their utility bills even without internet connection,” Naik added.
Commenting on the troubles faced by the common man as a result of demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes, the minister said that people are adjusting to the situation. “The problem is slowly being resolved,” he further added.
