Cops accused of dual yardsticks

It is now five years since the FIR against former PI; neither is the cop arrested nor is a charge-sheet filed in court

MARGAO: City-based activists on Friday wondered whether the Goa police employ different yardsticks for the common man and the men-in-uniform in taking cases to their logical conclusion.
Activists Succuro D’Souza and Laurel Abranches have slammed the Margao police for sleeping over a FIR registered against a former police inspector in-charge of Margao Police station based on directions issued by the court. They claimed that it is now five years since the Margao police registered a FIR against PI Rajendra Prabhudessai in a case based on directions of the court. The duo, however, lamented that though the FIR was registered against the PI in January 2010, neither has the Police officer been arrested till date nor is the case being charge-sheeted in the court.
“It is surprising that the Margao Police has only registered the FIR against PI Prabhudessai after the court directions. Unlike the common man who is immediately put behind bars, the Margao police are yet to arrest the Police officer or charge-sheet the case in court,” Succoro stated.
Both Succoro and Laurel have threatened to file a contempt petition against the Margao police if action is the case is not taken to its logical conclusion.
When Herald contacted Margao PI Sudesh Naik to ask him to shed light on the case, he said the police are investigating the case. “Though the police has registered a FIR, we are investigating into the complaint against the PI and his role in the charge sheet filed against Succoro,” PI Sudesh said.
In his complaint, Succorro had alleged that PI Prabhudessai had maliciously committed the case to trial by filing the charge-sheet against him without conducting investigations.
