Cops blame weak laws for not acting

With the rise of drugs in Salcete and the cops still searching for the absconding in the recent case, the success rate has been only to two bookings since 2013 and no major arrest or prosecution in drug peddling or in possession of narcotics in and around Salcete.

“The death of the 17-yer-old or even the death of these two boys at the party comes in Maina-Curtorim Police station jurisdiction and I from mMargao police station have no say on those cases or why there’s not much unraveled from them,” explains Margao PI Sudesh Naik.
Naik explains that his only success in 2014 was in two separate incidents when they rounded up two boys in two separate incidents in possession of marijuana.
“Here again there are three categories as per the law carrying small quantities, large quantities and huge quantities. In case of large quantities and above it’s a non-bailable offence. These were cases of small quantities and we register an FIR, call the parents, counsel maybe and let-off. That’s all,” Naik blames the law for less or mild punishments for possession in small quantities.
He states that they also generally round up boys even smoking or drinking if underage and call the parents.
Similarly PI Harish Madkaiker who is leading the investigations in the Curtorim double death at Alston’s party pointed out that there are two persons absconding who would give a clearer picture in the deaths and also that they have to wait for the post mortem and viscera reports.
“There are lot of practical difficulties, firstly shortage of staff in policing every nook and corner of the villages, then again if children or adolescents are rounded up in certain cases it’s their schools or parents who don’t register cases fearing embarrassment in society, then like this case there’s never a logical conclusion till viscera reports come and they are very delayed dues to which the case collapses,” explained Madkaiker.
The Anti-Narcotics Cell headed by SP Karthik Kashyap similarly stated that his department has not received complaints from Salcete villages of a drug menace and also the origin of these drugs seems to be the North Goa belt. “We are inconclusive of also what is being consumed or peddled, so we can’t reveal much as of now,” he said.
DYSP Mohan Naik, also investigating the drug overdose cases shuns responsibility of drugs sold and peddled among kids in Salcete and is quick to say that the North Goa belt from Anjuna to Vagator to Calangute is responsible for the origin of these drugs and the cops in that vicinity should be chased. He also feigned ignorance of drugs supplied in the South Goa Coastal belt of Cavelossim, Mobor, Bogmalo or Palolem-Agonda.
