CALANGUTE/PANJIM: Police teams are combing the coastal belt of Calangute, Anjuna and surrounding areas for carrying out verification drives on Nigerians staying in rented houses even as the Parra Panchayat is set to deliberate on the issue of Nigerians staying in Parra, on Tuesday.
Though the police teams are carrying out search on Nigerians and verifying documents such as passports, visas, etc, most of the Nigerians are not available at the rented premises.
The Calangute Police teams carried out search verification drives in the villages of Saligao, Candolim and Calangute, while their Anjuna counterparts kept a strict check on the movements of Nigerians staying in rented premises.
In Parra, the police were seen recording statements of the locals into the murder case of the Nigerian national. The Nigerians were however not seen moving out freely. Most of the Nigerians were not found at their respective rented premises.
Meanwhile, Parra Panchayat will hold an extra-ordinary gram sabha on Tuesday to discuss and deliberate over the issue of Nigerians staying and renting premises in the jurisdiction of the panchayat. There is only one point on the agenda, the issue of Nigerians staying in Parra.
When contacted, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo in the presence of Parra Sarpanch Delilah Lobo said: “Gram sabha is being convened on Tuesday to discuss and deliberate over the issue of Nigerians staying in Parra. The matter will be deliberated at length and decision will be taken accordingly.”
Sapanch Delilah Lobo said: “‘Special regulations’, those who have not converted their residences into commercial places for renting out premises to tenants including the foreigners will be termed as ‘illegal’.”
“They will be given time frame to vacate the houses by the illegal tenants, failing which action will be taken against the owners,” said the sarpanch.
“No NOC from the panchayat, no registration with the Tourism Department and no licence from TCP means ‘illegal,” added Lobo.
