Cops urge SEC to postpone counting

Goa Police has urged the State Election Commission to postpone counting of votes in the Corporation of City of Panjim (CCP) election to March 14.
In a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Dr M Modassir on Thursday, Deputy Inspector General of Police Ravindra Yadav requested that the results be delayed for a day to avert any possible of law and order issues.
“Although a thorough police protection will be deployed throughout the Election Day on March 13, there are apprehensions that anti-social elements may take advantage of the situation as the counting of votes is scheduled at 8 pm on the same day,” sources said.
Police are awaiting reply from the commission. Dr Modassir was, however. not available for comments till late Thursday night.
More than 13,000 Panjim voters will be going to polls on March 13 from 8 am to 5 pm.
Electronic voting machines from 68 polling stations will be collected and stored in the Government Pharmacy College, Panjim where counting of votes will begin from 8 pm. Results are expected on the same day, as per the Election Commission’s existing order.
