Corlim factory gutted

In a major fire that broke out in the wee hours of Saturday, a factory manufacturing crayons and colours at Corlim, was completely reduced to ashes.
Around 60 fire personnel and water tankers from the Fire Brigade Services of Old Goa, Panjim, Kundaim and from the Syngenta Company were pressed into action to douse of the fire at Faber Castell on Saturday. The impact of the fire was such that the fire personnel managed to bring it under control only at around 4.30 pm but could not save the unit instead managed to avoid the fire from spreading to the other two units in the same premises.
The incident came to light at around 3.30 am Saturday morning which was noticed by the security guard of the company who later brought it to the notice of the company officials. Luckily, not a single employee was present inside the crayons unit at the time of the incident, as Friday was a holiday on the occasion of Diwali.
The employees of Faber Castell unit who had come to join their duty early morning were in for a shock on seeing the unit in flames.
Speaking to Herald, Officer-in-Charge, Fire Station Old-Goa, Michael Braganza said, “I received a call at around 6.30 am that the company had caught fire and reaching the spot the entire unit was in flames. I informed other Fire Departments – Kundaim, Panjim and Syngenta Company fire services who also assisted in dousing the fire.”
Meanwhile, Production-in-Charge of Faber Castell unit, Jeetendra Bhandukar said that since Friday was a holiday it was difficult for them to ascertain as to what had happened and it was the security who noticed the fire and called the Fire Brigade.
When asked as to what was the estimated loss, Bhandukar said that he had to check with the finance department.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained and the actual loss too is yet to be estimated.
